atomised: broken up into a very fine mist. The term is used in connection with sprays and engine fuel systems.

Catalytic converters
These work by passing the spent exhaust fumes from the engine over a fine mesh coated with platinum or other material. This makes the gases turn into less poisonous forms. However, if a catalytic converter were used with leaded fuel, then the lead in the exhaust would coat the mesh and make the converter inoperable. This is why converters can only be used with lead- free fuel.
The first country to change from leaded to unleaded fuel was the United States, following a ruling by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1985. Most other industrial world countries have followed the same pattern, so that it is now less common to find leaded fuel on sale.
