Technology
Its low reactivity and widespread occurrence have made it an important metal for coating on other metals to prevent corrosion. The term tin can means a tin-plated steel can.Tin has also been used on baking dishes.
Geology
Tin is not found as the native metal, but mainly in the tin ore cassiterite (tin oxide, SnO2). Cassiterite occurs in hydrothermal veins close to ancient volcanoes.
Biology
Tin is a trace element in some animals, but tin compounds are mainly toxic to animals, bacteria and fungi. That is why they can be used as bactericides and fungicides.
Tin is a weak metal and is not used
for any form of construction.Alloys that are made with tin include solder, pewter, bronze and bell metal.Tin compounds
are sprayed onto glass to make the glass surface conduct electricity. Plate (window) glass is made by floating molten glass on
a bed of molten tin.Wire of tin–niobium alloys makes much more powerful magnets than those made using copper wire.Tin compounds have also been used on ship’s hulls to prevent the growth of barnacles. However, this use is being discontinued for environmental reasons.
 Cassiterite is the principal ore of tin.

 The Margate Elephant, New Jersey, was made out of tin to resisit the corrosive effects of the sea air.
