 This demonstration shows that transition metals, such as cobalt, make good catalysts.
Hydrogen peroxide solution is then added. The cobalt chloride catalyst assists in the rapid decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide, producing oxygen bubbles that make a froth that nearly fills the jar.
Sodium hydroxide is first added to the pinkish-coloured cobalt chloride.
A dark-blue precipitate of cobalt(ii) hydroxide forms that will act as a catalyst.
