For more on chlorine, see Volume 14: Chlorine, Fluorine, Bromine and Iodine in the Elements set.
Technology
Chlorine is obtained from sea water commercially by electrolysis. Because it is such a deadly poison, it is stored and transported as the liquid HCl, hydrochloric acid.
Chlorine can be used for bleaching and is the most common disinfectant in water supplies. It is also widely applied in the manufacture of plastics such as PVC as well as for medicines, antiseptics, insecticides, paints and cleaning liquids.
Geology
Chlorine as the compound sodium chloride, common salt, is found in sea water and also as the evaporite rock halite (NaCl).
Biology
It is extremely poisonous even in low concentrations. If chlorine is breathed in, it severely irritates the throat and lungs, and causes severe internal burning. It was used as a chemical weapon inWorldWar I.
Sodium chloride is a food preservative.
In this laboratory demonstration the copper is lowered into a jar containing chlorine. The reaction is violent, producing clouds of copper(ii) chloride.
