the skeleton of cartilaginous fish, such as sharks, is rarely preserved in fossils. Sharks’ teeth, however, remain as evidence of their presence.
(Above) The skeletons of bony fish can produce beautiful fossils, such as this fossil of the freshwater fish Priscacara liops. This specimen is 53 million years old, placing it in the Tertiary Period.
