(Right) The leaves of this plant have broken down completely, leaving only a thin mould or imprint, which is highlighted in white by a powdery deposit that has filled the space.
(Left) A nodule in which fossil is preserved.
(Below) When the
nodule is broken open,
it reveals both cast and mould. On the left is the cast, on the right you can see part of the mould.
(Above) The ‘insect’ in this amber has, in fact, decomposed completely, and what you can see is a mould. Because an insect has an outer skeleton, the mould looks just
