Stratus cloud
Stratus cloud
Layer clouds, usually characteristic of clouds in the mid- latitudes and high latitudes. Stratus clouds are dull grey. The thicker the cloud, the darker its colour.
Typically, stratus clouds will form along the fronts of depressions and bring bands of
prolonged rain. Stratus cloud at ground level is experienced as fog.
Stratus clouds have many names depending on their shape, their height and the likelihood they will bring rains. When the word stratus cloud is used on its own,
it refers to low level cloud. Higher-level layer clouds have
prefixes such as alto- (altostratus). There are also stratocumulus, cirrostratus, cumulostratus and nimbostratus.
Stratus cloud – Stratus cloud is the heavy, grey, featureless cloud that accompanies a weather front.
